What is Testable?

Testable is a browser-based research platform that lets you design, run, and analyse psychological experiments and surveys without any programming knowledge. You build your study in a simple spreadsheet editor, and participants complete it through any browser, with nothing to install.

This section of the documentation covers Testable itself, the builder you use to create, run, and analyse studies. Two sibling products have their own sections: Testable Minds for recruiting participants, and Testable Class for teaching with live experiments.

Why Testable?

Testable is built to serve the full range of researchers, from those running quick surveys to those designing complex, millisecond-accurate reaction time experiments.

  • No programming required. You define your study in a plain spreadsheet using natural language column names. No code, no GUIs to master.
  • Power and flexibility. Despite its simplicity, Testable supports highly complex designs: randomisation, branching logic, staircase procedures, multi-stimulus presentations, response time measurement, and more.
  • Speed. Going from idea to live study typically takes hours, not days.
  • Online and lab-ready. Run studies entirely online, in the lab, or as a hybrid. Participants connect via a link from any device.
  • Better data. Frame-accurate stimulus presentation, precise reaction time recording, and automatic CSV result files make analysis straightforward.
  • Data security. All data is stored securely in the cloud, and results are accessible only to you.

Who uses Testable?

Testable is used by researchers at universities and research institutions worldwide, from undergraduate students running their first experiment to senior academics and research teams running multi-year longitudinal studies. The community also maintains a growing library of ready-made experiment templates, and you can import and adapt any published template as a starting point for your own study.
