General Settings

The General settings panel (under Setup → General) controls project-wide behaviour that applies to every session.

Name

The Name field is your private label for the project. It is visible only to you and your collaborators; participants never see it.

Language

Set the language used for default UI text (button labels, form placeholders, error messages, etc.). This does not affect the content of your trial file.

Display colors

Configure the default visual appearance for all trials:

Individual trials can override these values using the bgColor, textColor, and color columns.

Progress bar

Enable a progress bar to show participants how far through the project they are. The bar reflects overall trial completion.

Advanced randomisation

By default Testable uses a built-in pseudo-random number generator. Enable Advanced randomisation to use random.org for truly random number sequences, useful when you need provably random trial ordering.

Audio and video preloading

When enabled, Testable downloads all audio and video files in the background before the participant reaches the trials that use them. This eliminates buffering delays mid-session.

Tip

Leave preloading enabled for projects with many media files. For very large stimulus sets with slow connections it can increase initial load time.

Security

Option	Description
Unique participation	Prevent the same browser/device from participating more than once
Bot protection	CAPTCHA-style challenge to block automated submissions
Location restriction	Limit participation to specified countries
Password protection	Require a password before participants can begin

Allowed devices

Restrict which device types can run the project:

• Desktop/laptop only
• Mobile only
• Any device

Saving results

Option	Effect
Cloud (default)	Results uploaded to Testable servers after each trial
Local	Results saved to the participant’s browser and exported on completion

Caution

Local saving means results are only available if the participant completes successfully and the export step runs. Cloud saving is recommended for most studies.

Recording

Optionally record additional data per session:

Operating system	OS name and version
Browser	Browser name and version
Screen size	Screen resolution in pixels
Audio	The participant’s microphone for the whole session, one audio file per participant
Frame rate	Browser rendering frame rate

Note

Session audio recording is independent of responseType = mic voice responses. This setting records everything from start to finish regardless of what the trial file does; per-trial voice responses and their audio files are configured in the trial file instead (see Responses in Experiments).

General instructions

Enter text to be shown to all participants on the opening screen of the project, before any trial file content. Supports basic HTML formatting.

Participant details form

Configure which demographic details to collect from participants at the start (before any trials). Options include age, gender, handedness, education, nationality, and up to 5 custom fields.
